Audiovisual installations - Biblioteca Pública do Porto, Portugal

  • Biblioteca Pública do Porto (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Luís Bittencourt is the composer for a series of original musical works created for multiple audiovisual installations developed in collaboration with the artistic collective Bairro dos Livros. The project consists of a multimedia artistic occupation of several spaces within the Biblioteca Pública do Porto, structured around poetic expression and conceived to celebrate the institution’s cultural legacy across different historical periods.

Through site-specific compositions, Bittencourt’s music will interact with image, space, and memory, enhancing the symbolic and sensory dimensions of the installations. His work will reflect the library’s evolving role in the collective memory of the city of Porto, as well as its practical and cultural functions over time.

The project will open to the public on March 20th, 21st, and 22nd of 2026. Free entrance.

III Festival de Leitura da Maia, Portugal

Luís Bittencourt will participate in the II Festival de Leitura da Maia, taking place from April 17 to 20. As part of the performance Leituras Improváveis (April 18, 6:00 pm), he will create a live sonic landscape that unfolds during and between the readings, shaping an immersive auditory environment that connects text, voice, and space.

Leituras Improváveis brings together figures from music, literature, and journalism to reinterpret canonical works of Portuguese literature in unexpected and provocative ways, reactivating their themes in the present and foregrounding the texture and expressive force of language. The program includes excerpts from Os Lusíadas by Luís Vaz de Camões; Maria Não Me Mates, Que Sou Tua Mãe by Camilo Castelo Branco; and A Sibila by Agustina Bessa-Luís.

Through subtle textures, resonances, and sonic interventions, Bittencourt’s performance will “stitch” the readings together, expanding their emotional and symbolic dimensions while placing listening at the heart of the festival’s celebration of reading as a practice of knowledge and citizenship.

Sounds of Resistance - Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon, Portugal

Sounds of Resistance

On May 17, at the open-air amphitheatre of the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon, Luís Bittencourt presents his solo performance Sounds of Resistance, marking the closing of the exhibition Testimonium by Jacob Kirkegaard.

Responding to the exhibition’s immersive exploration of waste, materiality, and hidden sonic layers, the performance extends these concerns into a live, embodied context. Testimonium invites audiences to listen to the “invisible pulsations” of discarded matter through complex sonic environments , and Bittencourt’s work echoes this perspective by activating objects, surfaces, and gestures as sites of resistance and transformation.

Through an intense and tactile sonic language, Sounds of Resistance unfolds as a performative act of listening—where sound becomes both trace and force, revealing the latent agency of materials and the political and poetic dimensions embedded within them.

Talk at MetaLab - Harvard University

On Tuesday, March 3 (11:00 am–12:00 pm EST), Luís Bittencourt will be the special guest presenter at the virtual community meeting of metaLAB. In this session, he will discuss how the perception of objects as musical instruments shapes creativity, knowledge, and artistic practice at the intersection of contemporary music, improvisation, experimental practices, and percussion. Framed by the evolving concept of instrumentality, the talk examines percussion as an open sonic universe—where any sound-producing object may function as an instrument—and explores how acoustic, digital, and virtual affordances transform musical creation, performance, and listening.

The session will also include time for updates, announcements, and open discussion. All are welcome.

metaLAB is an international research network based at Harvard University (since 2011), Freie Universität Berlin (since 2022), and the Academy of Arts and Design Basel (since 2024), with offices that collaborate closely while operating independently.

Space Festival 2025

  • Auditório do Museu Bienal de Cerveira (map)

In November 11th, Luís Bittencourt will come back to the iconic Space Festival to present his multimedia concert Sounds of Resistance. In a globalized, connected and technological world, affected by different sociocultural and environmental problems, forms of oppression and power relations, resistance practices aim to question, and sometimes subvert, social structures, discourses and hegemonic cultural practices. Music and arts have the ability to access human subjectivity and promote social transformation, strengthening our capacity for reflection, questioning and engagement in the face of contemporary challenges. "Sounds of Resistance" proposes a reflection on the possible resistance practices within our reach. In this concert, Luís Bittencourt explores musical creation through ordinary objects and materials not usually recognized as musical instruments (such as a metal drum or plastic bags) in order to explore new sounds and repertoires. The concert is part of the work Import/Export: Percussion Suite for Global Junk, by Englishman Gabriel Prokofiev, with videos created exclusively for the project by Portuguese artist Flávio Almeida. With this concert, Luís Bittencourt proposes a reflection on the aesthetic (and sometimes static) and dominant ideals that separate music from noise, musical sounds from non-musical sounds, art from everyday life.

Som e Sentido: A Musical Journey for Freedom

  • Escola Básica Manuel Antonio Pina (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Som e Sentido: A Musical Journey for Freedom is a participatory music and arts project developed during the 2024/2025 academic year with students from EB Manuel António Pina in Vila Nova de Gaia. As part of the national celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April Revolution in Portugal, the initiative invited children to reflect on themes such as freedom, environmental awareness, and digital dependency through collaborative creation. The project culminated in a unique concert-manifestation, where the students performed original songs, built their own percussion instruments, and carried placards with their own messages—transforming the stage into a space of sound, protest, and celebration.

The project was conceived and produced by Tatiana Vargas, who brought together a multidisciplinary team of artists including singer-songwriter Sara Yasmine, electronic musician Frankão, and multi-instrumentalist and artistic researcher Luís Bittencourt. Bittencourt played a central role in the artistic direction and mentoring of the children, guiding their exploration of sound, rhythm, and performative expression. His involvement emphasized a commitment to participatory creation and the transformative potential of music as a tool for critical thinking and collective empowerment.

This project is funded by DGArtes, Portugal.
