Luís Bittencourt is a multi-instrumentalist and an active performer considered “a master of sound experimentation” (Vision Magazine, Portugal) and his performances “a torrent of originality” (Casa da Música, Portugal). Some of his solo projects are Sons de Resistência, a multimedia concert that addresses political and environmental issues though music performed with a set of junk, global objects and materials; Memórias Líquidas, a concert that brings mesmerising sound combinations by presenting water as a musical instrument. Luis Bittencourt is a creative composer interested in any form of sound production and musical manifestation — instrumental, contemporary, experimental, jazz, world music, pop, rock, minimalism, gamelan, soundtrack and film music, folk, notated or free improvised, solo, ensemble, orchestral or chamber music, among many others. As composer and music producer he obtained 1st prize in the competition “Legends of China - Confucius Arts Institute Award 2016” and has already collaborated with different artists and institutions, such as pianist and composer Cecile Elton, Lange Studios, Instagram® and Cannes Lions. Luís Bittencourt is a curious artist-researcher with a deep interest in percussion, sound, musical performance, contemporary music, performative research, extended techniques, unusual instruments and sound sources, instrumentality, improvisation, experimental music and music experimentation, performance studies, embodied knowledge, epistemology, philosophy of music, and more. Bittencourt is interested in developing artistic research projects and uses percussion as a medium for it. He holds a PhD in Music Performance and a Master in Music Performance from University of Aveiro, Portugal, and a Bachelor Degree in Percussion Performance (Federal University of Santa Maria, Brazil). He is currently hired as artist researcher in the project “XPerimus: experimentation in music in Portuguese culture: history, contexts and practices in the 20th and 21st centuries” and integrated researcher at the Institute of Ethnomusicology - Centre of Studies in Music and Dance (INET-md).
